EHS Specialist

Department: Corp Env Health Safety
Location: Memphis, TN

Position Summary:

This position will provide technical environmental, health and safety (EHS) support to Barr including assist in developing corporate EHS programs and objectives, coordinate training programs, monitor EHS regulations, and provide technical support to the company to ensure compliance with those regulations. Work is performed under the general direction of the EHS Manager.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical EHS support and information to Barr to ensure compliance with EHS regulations.
  • Investigates and monitors lost-time injuries/illnesses and Worker's Compensation claims within area of responsibility.
  • Reviews injury/illness and non-injury incident investigation reports and follows-up as necessary.
  • Prepares written EHS programs and policies.
  • Identifies company EHS training needs and assists in developing and coordinating appropriate training programs.
  • With manager, develops annual EHS goals; works with others in the organization to achieve goals.
  • Participates in new product/process reviews including process hazard analyses, Operator Training, Product Quality Training, etc.
  • Supports corporate/plant engineering to implement engineering controls to eliminate safety and occupational health hazards and ensures compliance with applicable environmental regulations/permits.
  • Understands EHS regulations and monitors regulatory changes as they occur.
  • Advises the company of regulatory changes with which it must comply. Sufficient advance notice should be provided so that compliance on the effective date of new regulations is assured.
  • Audits practices and records of the company to ensure compliance with company programs and EHS regulations and identifies potential risks, develops mitigation strategies (in partnership with EHS Manager)..
  • Supports plant personnel in selection of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Promotes EHS awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters, and specific training programs.
  • Assists in implementation of Hazard Communication program and preparation of reports. Coordinates all EHS reporting, including TOSHA Workplace Chemical List, Form R, Tier II, Air Permit compliance, etc. and analyzes data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Prepares Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for Barr Products.
  • Coordinates and conducts EHS audits of third-party business partners of Barr (e.g. contract packagers).
  • Reviews process operating procedures/batch records and provides input for safety and health considerations.
  • Interfaces with Operations, Administration, Technical, R&D, and other departments to ensure all EHS regulations are understood, clarified, and implemented.
  • May perform other duties or special projects are required by manager.


Qualifications/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required; degree in Safety Science, Engineering, or related industrial hygiene discipline preferred.
Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in manufacturing operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

Working knowledge of EHS regulations applicable to chemical manufacturers is also preferred.
CSP certification is a plus
Experience in ISO 9000 and lean manufacturing is a plus.

Must have excellent organization and follow-up skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to organize and prioritize work assignments; ability to handle multiple priorities/project manage in a fast-paced environment; ability to analyze situations and respond in a timely manner; ability to participate in multi-functional teams; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the WM Barr organization; ability to establish and implement new processes; working knowledge of computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, charts and graphics. Some overtime may be required.


Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:

  • Typical office and warehouse environment with moderate noise level.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, talk, hear, and see for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Limited travel may be required (0-10%).
