Production Maintenance Technician - 1st Shift

Department: Channel Fill and Pack 1st
Location: Memphis, TN

Position Summary: Set up, adjust, repair, and maintain machinery and mechanical equipment to support the safe, efficient and productive operation of the Channel and Buoy production facilities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Manager, Maintenance and Controls; may be on-call nights and weekends for emergency or unscheduled repairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviews work orders daily for repair and maintenance of machinery and mechanical equipment including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, mixers, packaging equipment, conveyor systems, and other production machines and facility equipment; estimates material requirements and repairs and/or replaces defective parts as needed; analyzes mechanical and other operations problems and takes corrective action; reports all unsafe equipment, machinery, and practices to Manager, Maintenance and Controls.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears and other machinery parts; performs preventive maintenance as scheduled.
  • Maintains inventory of tools, parts, repair supplies and other materials; obtains quotes for replacement parts and materials and prepares requisitions as needed; fabricates parts not commercially available using hand and other machine tools; maintains tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Sets up and operates machine tools such as hand saw, planer, joiner, shaper, drill press, lathe, grinder and other equipment to repair and fabricate machine parts; uses all tools as instructed.
  • May check, clean and maintain boilers; may inspect and repair boiler fittings; may open valves and adjust regulators to control flow through pipelines and/or blow sludge from system.
  • May install and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment; may measure, cut and bend wire and conduit; may replace faulty electrical components including fuses, light sockets, bulbs, relays, switches, and motors; may rewire motors; may review wiring diagrams, specifications or instructions from manager for repairs, installations, or inspections to be performed.
  • May assemble, install and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures; may repair and replace gauges, valves, pressure regulators and related equipment; may bend, cut, thread, and cut piping; may shape and fabricate pipe to particular requirements of the job.
  • May operate cutting torch or welding equipment to fabricate equipment by cutting, burning, and joining various metals; may repair equipment by using welding techniques and appropriate gas or electric welding equipment.
  • May install, repair, calibrate, service and replace electronic devices and systems.
  • Maintains records of purchases, daily activities, work orders, preventive maintenance, etc.
  • May perform other work and special projects as required by manager.
  • Safely cleans up and disposes of hazardous materials / accumulates hazardous waste generated during maintenance activities.

Qualifications/Experience:

High school diploma or G.E.D. is required and at least five (5) years experience in general repairs and line maintenance in a manufacturing environment.

Must have mechanical aptitude, demonstrated ability to work with hands and use various tools; the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; must be able to read, write, speak, and comprehend English. Must possess the ability to work with minimal supervision; be organized with good written and oral communication skills; ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment. Ability to work overtime as required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:

  • Manufacturing environment with loud noise level.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, talk, hear and see for extended periods of time; regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds; specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, correspondence; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak and present information in small groups of suppliers or employees of the company.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret diagrams and charts.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions give in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to have limited exposure to fumes or airborne particles; ability to work near moving equipment; ability to climb in overhead structures and work beneath machines in close quarters to perform installations, repairs and maintenance; regularly exposed to vibration; may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
  • The use of safety glasses is required.
